Making the Most of Your Space
A New Paradigm in Interior Design
This unprecedented time we’re all living through has led to a new paradigm in interior design and how people are thinking of their homes. Our homes are playing a central role in this crisis and how we utilize our space is rapidly evolving. Here in the Hamptons at LMS Design, we’ve always focused on designing peaceful, personalized spaces that suit our clients and their lifestyle. Now, we’re all looking at our homes—and our second homes—with different eyes. Many people who decamped from the city to retreats on the East End are planning to stay here through the off-season or longer. Suddenly, summer homes have greater needs to fulfill.
We’ve been busy these last several months helping our clients make their places and spaces work better for their new needs. We’re all seeking comfort and functionality in our homes, whether you have a large bustling family or live solo. Our homes now have many roles to play; from office to school to restaurant to gym—and they can be a powerful resource for helping to keep us safe and balanced. Here are some of the trends and patterns we’re noticing as we guide our clients through the process of reimagining their spaces:
Storage: Our clients are looking at the potential of untapped spaces in their homes for storage purposes. People are stocking up and buying in bulk and need spaces to efficiently organize and store their supplies. In the past, their summer homes may have only required space for the storage of seasonal items and goods—now, storage space is needed for all-season wardrobes, personal items and more. We’re helping clients maximize their homes by identifying and designing new storage opportunities and systems.
Home Offices: As so many of our clients made the shift to working at home, having a dedicated office space—or even dual home offices—has become a top priority. People need a separate, quiet space to conduct their business that’s not only functional but set apart from the bustling areas in their homes. Spare bedrooms are being remodeled as home offices and even exterior spaces such as barns, sheds and out-buildings are being repurposed to fill this need. This is a trend that will outlast the pandemic, as having employees work from home part or full time becomes standard.
Kitchens and Baths: These have always been the most popular spots for home remodeling projects and this trend continues. Our clients who may have put off kitchen and bath renovations are now finding the time to focus on these projects. Now more than ever, our kitchens are truly the center of our home lives as more of us are cooking and dining at home. And since our clients are spending more time indoors, they’re also seeking to update the comfort and utility of their home’s bathrooms as well.
At LMS Design, we’re tuned in to the nuances of our clients’ homes and help them navigate the often overwhelming task of interior design. Whether your home is newly-built, or you’re looking to renovate and remodel your beloved family retreat, our team will guide you through the process. We listen to your needs and help you prioritize projects and set a budget.
